Parishioner Profiles (in Isolation) – Ian and Joan

Pewsheets

Ian, who works in our churchyard maintenance team, writes:

Due to the current situation, the churchyard at St Nicholas’ will now be left to naturalise – good for nature, but not for access to graves.  With both and our volunteering at Nymans Gardens on hold, and with a spell of good weather, we have had no excuses for not getting our own garden ship-shape.

So the spring jobs that we have been doing include:

  • Strengthening the fence panels following the battering they received from Ciara, Dennis and Jorge
  • Dead-heading daffodils
  • General weeding and tidying of the borders and lawn
  • Digging the vegetable patch
  • Sowing flower and veg seeds in the hope that we have a summer to enjoy – but we will need both some rain as well as sunshine !

News on the Refurbishment of St Barnabas’

Building

As you may know, we are undertaking a sizeable building project encompassing work at both St Nicholas’ and St Barnabas’.  A visit from the Crawley Planning Officer to St Barnabas’ in January advised us that the proposed size and position of our new porch were acceptable to the planning officers, but the material was a concern. Having revised our drawings and changed to a ‘brick and tiles’  porch, the work has gone out to tender with four contractors: Valley Builders, Corniche Construction Ltd, Dane Elliot Construction and Copperstones Projects Ltd.

Robin of Dane Elliot Construction and Darren of Corniche Construction Ltd were able to visit the church prior to the lockdown, with the remaining firms saying they would view the exterior as soon as possible, and see the interior at a later date.

It is with huge thanks to Phyl who has made several grant applications that we are delighted to announce:

  • The Beatrice Laing Family Trust have made a conditional offer of £2500 (once we have a project start date, and all other funding is in place)
  • The National Lottery Community Fund has granted us £10,000
  • The Gatwick Foundation Fund at Sussex Community Foundation has awarded us £5000

Of course, more funding is still needed and with the current situation, all our fundraising is on hold. Therefore, if you would like to support this project, all donations would be very gratefully received. Our bank details are: Worth PCC, Sort Code: 40-18-22 Account Number: 61223372 and please use the reference: “St B project”.

From Father Michael…

Clergy

Normally at this stage in the year, we would be busy preparing for Holy Week and our Easter celebrations. The churches would have had their spring clean, printing and other preparations for the major services would all be underway or completed. This year is different. This year we have to stay apart physically rather than come together.

While this may feel like we are under siege, we can, and are, finding ways to keep in touch, stay connected, to encourage one another and find useful things to do at home; all those little jobs we have been putting off!

We would love to hear what you are doing during this time of isolation. Are those spare rooms being decorated, those cluttered corners tidied, is the garden pretty much now weed-free? Please tell us and share some photos.

One job in St Nicholas’ churchyard we are very pleased to have got done before the lockdown restrictions took effect, has been the replacement of the boundary fence on the south side of what will be the new Garden of Remembrance. Our grateful thanks to Scott and Jason.

Here are the before an after photos:

Peace be with you.

Pie Jesu, from the Fauré Requiem

Music

From their isolation, our Director of Music, Alex and local singer Sophia have kindly recorded for us the Pie Jesu from Fauré’s Requiem. Originally our plan was to invite you to rehearse from September for a performance of this Requiem on 31 October 2020. We will let you know if that plan becomes possible again, but in the meantime, enjoy their video.
